Reults of the debating competition
On the 12th December 2010, Loreto Kilkenny hosted a debating competition against other Loreto schools. Competitors came from Fermoy and Clonmel to participate in and support the debaters. All of the debaters presented very valid points and showed great confidence in themselves as they spoke. All three schools were brilliant, and each took part in two debates. The three debates during the day were:

1.      School today is a enjoyable experience.
Loreto Kilkenny vs Loreto Fermoy

2.      TV and Internet are harmful influences on the lives on young people.
Loreto Fermoy vs Loreto Clonmel

3.      Our lives are easy.
Loreto Kilkenny vs Loreto Clonmel.

The overall winners of the competition were Loreto Kilkenny, who are now through to a higher level.

Debating – Results

On Thursday, October 21st last, Ciara Mahon, Hannah Read, Shauna Scannell and Vicky Day travelled to UCD in Dublin to take part in the “Denny” All – Ireland Schools Debating Competition. The Leister branch of this competition included 400 competitors from 100 schools in the South East. The Loreto girls were given the motion “That this house would legalise cannabis” and were put on the proposing side. The night was very eventful, and included many interesting points and refutes alike. All of the girls put forward very interesting and valid arguments and Ciara Mahon was ultimately successful in progressing to the next round as an individual debater. We wish her the very best of luck in future rounds!

Mace Debates 2010

Our Mace Debating team at Loreto Stephen`s Green

Loreto Mace Debates March 2010 in Dublin

It was an early start for the Loreto Mace Debators as they headed to Loreto College, Stephen`s Green on Wednesday the 10th of March. Fourth years Niamh Tuohy, Niamh Dhondt and sixth years Hazel Doyle and Jane Farrell began the first of a long day of arguments at 9.30am. Round One opened with the motion “That this house regrets the popularity of social networking sites.” This became a topic that generated strong views from all teams involved. The two fourth years took to the proposition while the sixth years argued for the same side in a separate debate.

This first debate set the wheels in motion for the next two rounds; “That this house would make all schools co-educational.” and “That this house believes celebrities offer good role models.” It was only in the third round that the two Kilkenny teams came face to face, on opposite sides of the podium.

Niamh Dhondt and Niamh Tuohy then made it to the semi finals where they debated the motion “That this house would advise young people to emigrate.” This was the most heated of all topics and created some tension between opposite sides. The two fourth years did their best to support the motion but missed out on a place in the final to Loreto Balbriggan and Loreto Beaufort, two very strong teams.

Thank you to our teacher Ms. Griffin and to  Loreto on the Green for organising the event and well done to everyone, who all spoke strongly on the day.
