Leinster Final vs Pres

On the 29th January a very exciting replay of the Junior A Leinster Final took place in Clara. It was a clash of well known rivals as Loreto took on Presentation Kilkenny in what was certain to be a memorable game.

Both teams lined the pitch with looks of fierce determination on their faces. Presentation opened the scoring, getting a point in the 3rd minute, a rude awakening for Loreto. Loreto’s first score came in the 7th, a well taken free by Roisin Breen. The game really got going when Jenny Clifford let off a great pass to Roisin Breen who smashed the ball into the top corner for Loreto. Ten minutes later Eva Maher showed Loreto’s hunger after winning a well fought for ball and passing it to Megan Walsh who scored Loreto’s second goal. Presentation answered with a goal of their own and it was clear that the teams were evenly matched, neither giving an inch up to half time.

Half Time: Loreto 2.7     Presentation 1.5

The second half started off very well for Presentation with them scoring three consecutive points. A sudden break of the ball from Eva Maher to Ciara Byrne surprised Presentation and a quick pass to Roisin Breen resulted in a third goal for Loreto. It looked like it wasn’t going to be Presentation’s day but they fought on scoring yet another goal and point. Two minutes to go Loreto were only one point ahead and some great saves by goalkeeper Kirsty Maher made it look like it would be Loreto’s day, when a minute to go Presentation were awarded a  free. Fortunately Loreto’s defence was strong as ever with Sarah Kent in control, the free was missed.

Full Time: Loreto 3.8         Presentation 2.10

Scorers: Roisin Breen (2.3) Jenny Clifford (0.2) Ciara Byrne (0.1) Megan Walsh (1.0) Eva Maher (0.2)

Leinster Final Sucess
On the 14th January the Loreto senior camogie team took on their age old rivals Presentation Kilkenny in the senior A Leinster Final.
It was a bitterly cold morning in Clara and the tension was fierce as the two teams lined out on the pitch, but fortunately Loreto came out on top on the day.
The battled commenced as the ball was thrown in and for the first three minutes the teams were evenly matched and fighting hard for every ball that came their way. A free in the fourth minute taken by Lydia Fitzpatrick found Loreto’s corner forward Orla Hanrick who took the goal superbly.
From then on the scored just kept coming for Loreto with two points and another goal coming within six minutes of each other, Loreto were off to a flying start. The girls showed some great teamwork and passing skills as the ball was worked around the forwards in order to achieve every point.
The third goal came in the 15th minute when Sarah-Ann Quinlan gave a great pass out the wing to Aoife Murphy who blasted the ball into the top corner of the net. Another goal followed as Orla Hanrick and Jenny Clifford showed some great teamwork and determination to keep the ball from their opposition.
Just before half time Presentation were fighting hard to stay in the game and scored their first point of the match. It was answered by yet another goal from Loreto as Sarah-Ann Quinlan sent an unstoppable bullet into the top corner.
Half time: Loreto: 5.6 Presentation: 0.1
The second half started off with Presentation attacking forward in search of a goal but their plan was foiled with an amazing save from goal keeper Kirsty Maher and the ball went over the bar instead. Loreto fought on with absolute class as the ball was worked from mid-field with Phelan to Fitzpatrick to Clifford to Murphy where it found net- a goal that would have left any defence helpless.
Presentation added three more points to their score sheet but it was Loreto’s day.
The score ended up: Loreto 8.10    Presentation: 0.5

Claire Phelan (0.2) Sarah Dunphy (2.0) Aoife Murphy(2.2) Jenny Clifford (2.1) Orla Hanrick (1.2) Sarah-Ann Quinlan (1.2) Marie Doheny(0.1)

All-Ireland Colleges Mini-Sevens 2010

Loreto Kilkenny travelled to St. Peregrines GAA club Blanchardstown on Saturday 16 October in an attempt to retain their mini 7’s colleges All-Ireland title.
Loreto played St. Flannans College of Clare in their opening game. Orla Hanrick’s opening point from a free got the game underway. They continued in the same fashion to win the match 2-9 to 2 goals. A great performance from captain Miriam Walsh with five points gave the team an early confidence.
In their second game, they played Magherafelt who travelled from county Derry. An early goal from Lydia Fitzpatrick in the third minute settled the team to an easy win. Loreto proved too strong for the Derry team and won the match 1-8 to 2 points.
So with two wins under their belt Loreto played St. Brigids Vocational School Loughrea in the final. They had also won all their matches. This game showed great promise as the teams seemed very even and had great players on each team.
The game opened with Lydia Fitzpatrick’s great first touch and a point was the result. But Loughrea quickly replied with a goal in the third minute. Kate Holland then stood up from the backline to come up and score a great goal in the fourth minute. Once again Loughrea got a point to level the game. At half time Loreto went in leading 2-2 to 1-3 thanks to an Orla Hanrick goal and a point from captain Miriam Walsh.
The eventful second half proved to be a very tight and tense game with each team matching each other very closely. A goal chance after 3 minutes for Loughrea was brilliantly intercepted by Tracey Brennan. After 6 minutes each team had scored 1-1. The tides turned as Loughrea got two penalties in quick succesion, scoring a goal the second. No better woman than Loreto’s Miriam Walsh to stand up and score a crucial goal. 2 more goals were scored by the lively Loughrea forwards. Then Lydia Fitzpatrick got a point to make it a 3-point game. Loreto then got the fourth penalty of the game and Orla Hanrick stuck it to score the goal to level it. Full-Time 5-4 apiece.
Extra-time was necessary so two five-minute periods were left in this great game. Loreto once again opened the score-board with a great Tracey Brennan run from deep in the backline and resulted in a great point. Loughrea weren’t dead and scored 1-1. Once again Miriam Walsh stood up and scored a great goal and an Orla Hanrick free meant Loreto were ahead by a point at half-time.
Five minutes left and Loreto proved the greatest. With Lydia Fitzpatrick scoring 2-1 and a point from Miriam Walsh, Loughrea had no answer. A goal with 3 minutes left from Loughrea was all they could create.

A fantastic final with a final score of 8-8 to 7-6. A promising final led to a great final and a great day all round.  Great thanks is due to St Peregrines Club and all involved.
Also well-done to Aylson Craine and Presentation Kilkenny who won the Roinn B final beating Loreto Coolraine (Derry) on a score line of 4-15 to 0-2.

Junior Champions 2010

Our Junior Camogie girls put in a terrific performance to claim the Junior Camogie title for our school for a third time in four years.  They also created history by completing a clean sweep of All Ireland `A` Camogie titles in one year.  We are only the second school in the history of the game to win the Senior, Junior and seven-a-side `A` competitions in one year.  The girls defeated a fancied St Brigid`s Loughrea side on a scoreline of 1-16 to 2-7.  This score (a record number of points for a final) reflects a stylish and skillful performance by the Loreto girls who got exceptional points during the course of the game.  Team captain, Kate Holland, recieved the cup on behalf of the team to the delight of her team mates and the supporters.

Congratulations to the Loreto girls and best of luck in the All-Ireland Final on the 12th March against Maghera.
