                     Senior (B) League

12-01-2011

                           Loreto KK VS KK College

The Loreto Senior B’s League campaign came to a close today as they took on Kilkenny College, in Kilkenny College. If Loreto were to succeed in defeating KK College it would mean that Loreto would win the league as they had defeated all other opposition.
Loreto played well in the first half and had most of the possession. Unfortunately Loreto failed to convert a score in this half despite their great chances and best efforts. Loreto conceded two goals to the KK College side, one of which came from a short corner.
The second half got off to a great start for Loreto, with Aoife Murphy scoring a fantastic goal. Despite their hard work and perseverance Loreto were defeated on a score line of 2-1. The winners of the league will be decided on goal difference. As Loreto and St. Leo’s (Carlow) have won equal number of matches in the league, the team who has scored most goals in the league will be crowned champions of the league.

Loreto Kilkenny v. Loreto Wexford 20/10/10
On the 20th October, Loreto Wexford travelled here, to Loreto Kilkenny. The teams that travelled up included: the Loreto Wexford Junior A, Senior A and Senior B hockey teams.
Junior A:
The day got off to a good start, with our Junior A team coming out on top, by beating the Loreto Wexford team 1-0. The goal came from a well timed run by Áine Buggy.
Final Score: Loreto Wexford 0-1 Loreto Kilkenny
Senior A:
This was the second match of the day, and was very tightly contested to the end. Although Loreto Kilkenny were missing two key players, they didn’t let this rupture their chances at all. Loreto Kilkenny were very unlucky when Wexford managed to get past Kilkenny’s strong defense, and scored a goal. Loreto Kilkenny had many good chances, but were but were unfortunate not to convert.
Final Score: Loreto Wexford 1 – 0 Loreto Kilkenny
Senior B:
This was the third and final match of the day. Loreto Kilkenny dominated this match from the very start. Not long into the match the first goal came from Noelle Maher. Not too long after a second goal came from Orla Ryan. Noelle Maher put the cherry on top by scoring the third goal for Loreto Kilkenny.
Final Score: Loreto Wexford 0 – 3 Loreto Kilkenny
By Catriona Twomey and Louise Kenny.

Hockey All Irelands

Our Senior Hockey team put in some excellent performances at the All Ireland finals.  In their first game, they had a terrific win over a fancied Cresent College Limerick side.  They defeated the Munster Champions on a scoreline of 2-1.

The girls` second game was effectively an All Ireland semi-final.  The opposition were the reigning All Ireland Champions, Colaiste Iognaid Galway.  We got off to a terrific start, scoring the first goal.  However, the scoreline finished at 3-2 in favour of the champions.  It was a terric performance, that saw the Loreto girls come agonisingly close to qualifying for an All Ireland final.  In Friday`s game we were defeated by Royal College, Armagh to give us an overall fourth place in the tournament.

We are very proud of the efforts of our Senior Hockey squad and management team of Ms Holland, David Harrington and Ms Kennedy.

We are also very proud of our goalkeeper, Ciara Shortall, who was awarded the title of `Player of the Tournament`; a magnificent achievement.

Wednesday 9th November 2011, St. Declans
Hockey Match Report On Wednesday the 9th two Junior hockey matches were held in Loreto. The Junior A and Junior B hockey teams challenged St. Declans from Carlow. The Junior B team, captained by Anne-Marie Byrne, played first. They possessed the ball for the majority of the game, but two breaks were made by St. Declans where goals were scored. The final result was 2-0 to St. Declans, but Loreto Kilkenny made a great performance. At 1.30pm the Junior A match commenced after a steady warm up lead by captain Sarah Lanigan. With ferocious Loreto Kilkenny holding possession an excellent goal was scored by right wing Anna Sheehan within the first five minutes. Fifteen minutes into the game a short corner was awarded to Loreto Kilkenny but didn’t bear any goals. Soon after, a very skilful goal was scored by captain Sarah Lanigan. Within a few minutes a short corner was awarded to St. Declans, and they scored a goal. By halftime the score was 2-1. After a very spirited talk was given by Miss Hollad and David Loreto Kilkenny went out in the second half guns blazing. Loreto Kilkenny scored another goal, a rebound hit in by Eimer Mc Mullan, but St. Declans quickly caught up scoring another goal from a short corner. There was very skilful play from the defence. Holly Moore and the captain Sarah Lanigan. In the last minute of the game, St. Declans scored a goal to make the final score 3-3.

Wednesday Nov. 16th, Enniscorthy, Junior A
Hockey Report On Wednesday the 16th of November, the First Year A, Junior A and Senior A hockey teams travelled to Enniscorthy in Wexford to play against Loreto Wexford. It was a very successful day, with all three teams winning their matches. The Junior A match was second to be played after the Senior A winning their match. Team captain and vice captain Sarah Lanigan and Anna Sheehan led their team into a warm up through the brutal rainy weather. The match commenced soon after. The girls went out all guns blazing, ready for the challenge. By the time fifteen minutes of the game had been played, we were 1-0 up, an excellent score made by Bronagh Cadogan who successfully won the ball and broke through the Wexford defence line and scoring for her team. At half time the girls were tired but ready for the second half. The second goal of the day was really some amazing play, with a wonderful pass from Laura Greene to Bronagh Cadogan who won the ball, and then a cross into the D from Bronagh to Eimear Nolan who then pushed it across the goal to Eimer Mc Mullan who gave it a little flick into the back of the goal. There were some excellent passes from palyers such as Margaret Caldbeck, Aimee Morrissey, Sarah Lanigan and Anna Sheehan. The backline was very strong on the day barely letting any Wexford ball go through their sturdy defence formation. There was some great defensive play form Holly Moore, Sharon Quinlan, and Niamh Phelan. Of course the goalie, Aoife Prendergast, did a wonderful job making some great saves. There was lovely skill and talent to be seen in this game.

Cheltenham Hockey Tournament 2011
Cheltenham Hockey Report Last year 20 lucky hockey players were chosen to attend a tournament in Cheltenham in October this year. The hockey players were chosen to challenge other hockey teams Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. We set off for Cheltenham on Friday the 28th of October leaving from the school on the early hours of the morning, and did not reach our destination, the Hallmark Hotel in Gloucester, until 6.30pm that evening. We got settled and were ready for the day to come. On Saturday we woke up bright and early, as we were playing the first match of the tournament against Cheltenham Ladies College. Loreto played very well and thid resulted in a win 1-0. We took a break and went back onto the pitch after an hour to play against Dalriada Hockey Club from Northern Ireland. We knew they would be stiff competition, and although we made a stunning performance we didn’t match up to Dalriada, losing 2-0, the second goal only scored by Dalriada’s top player in the last minute. After that match we had lunch in Deans Close before playing our final match of the day against Gower where we won 7-0. On Sunday we got started at 10 o clock in Deans close. Our first macth was against Swansea, and if we won we were propelled to the final. We ended up winning easily, progressing into the final. When the time of the final came around we were ready for action and that’s what we got! We won our final against Stowe 7-0 leaving us the winners of the C plate. It was an extremely enjoyable trip to be remembered!

Senior B Hockey match, Waterford, 11/1/12
Hockey Match Report On Wednesday the 11th of January, our senior B hockey team had a very important game against St. Declans in Carlow. The match was held in Waterford so it would be on neutral ground. The game would decide which team would progress to the next round as it was a knockout match. The team was ready to go and warmed up when the whistle blew at 10.30am. The game got off to a lively start with both teams giving their all to secure their place in the next round. There was some excellent play to be seen from the centre mid and captain Niamh Leahy as she fought for every ball showing how much she wanted a victory. Within twenty minutes of the first half one of the St. Declans forwards won the ball and broke through our defenders to take a shot at goal, and with that at half time the game was 1-0 in favour of St. Declans. In the second half Loreto were ready to try and switch the game around. The defenders, Grainne Egan, Annie Condren, Chloe Power and Marie Doheny picked up their game and prevented any more St. Declans shots getting in to the circle. Meanwhile, our forwards Orla Dooley, Emma Dooley and Sarah Hennessy worked hard to even out the score. When a short corner was awarded in our favour we seized the opportunity and a goal was scored by Niamh Leahy. When time was up and the score was even, a decision was made to go to 20 minutes of extra time. Even though the game was played on grit Loreto showed off their true skills. There was a great effort form both teams although the score stayed the same. A rematch is to be scheduled.
