St Vincent de Paul Report

The St. Vincent De Paul Society in Loreto has been very busy this year. With the ever growing demand of aid from SVP, we have been fundraising, visiting old folk’s homes, and generally raising awareness.

Our society in school meets every Tuesday at lunch time to discuss ideas and plan events. Anyone can come along to the meetings. We had a cake sale in the school to raise much needed funds. All the girls in the Society baked cakes and sold them to other students in the school. This proved very successful and we raised a lot of money. We donated €500 to the various St. Vincent De Paul conferences around Kilkenny city.

Over Christmas we volunteered to wrap presents in McDonagh Junction which was also a great success. We really noticed how generous people were even though Christmas was just around the corner.

More recently we visited the Drakelands nursing home. We danced, sang, and played music to the old people, which they enjoyed greatly. We hope to make more trips before the year is over. Also recently in aid of homeless people, we sat on the corridors of the school with blankets around us during lunch time to raise awareness.

It has been a great year for us and I am really looking forward to next year J

SVP Hamper and Toy Appeal
With Christmas just around the corner, we decided, as the St Vincent de Paul group, it was necessary to get a start on the annual SVP Christmas hamper in our school. This would involve collecting non-perishable goods and arranging them into hampers to send down to the SVP shop. These would then be distributed to the poor before Christmas. At the beginning, we failed to receive much response, but as a result of a few intercom announcements the tinned foods were in no short supply, with the first and second years proving themselves the most enthusiastic in helping the worthy cause. We drew up a rota, with different people collecting each day until the 5th of December, the closing date. During this, many toys were collected also, which were later donated to RTE 2FM’s Toy Appeal. The foods were organised into boxes, after having checked the dates and categorising them. It was quite strenuous work but by Wednesday we were ready to bring the hampers down to SVP. It was there we met Linda, the shop manager, who thanked us for all our hard work and efforts.

Cake Sale Dec 11
On Friday the 9th of December we held a cake sale in aid of St Vincent de Paul. We set up in the canteen at lunch and break with our float and baked goods. As the committee is only made up of twenty members, cakes to be sold were in quite short supply. None the less, we tried our best and in total managed to raise 132 euro for SVP. We delivered this to the shop that afternoon.

Christmas Crafts Dec 2011

The SVP members, this year, had the pleasure in helping out at Mrs. Farragher`s annual  Christmas Craft`s Sale in the school. A rota was drawn up  and diffferent people took it in turns to involve themselves in tasks such as manning the desk, counting money, setting up the table and making posters. The sale took place on Monday 12th and Wednesday 14th of December. Mrs. Farragher`s gorgeous little Christmas decorations proved very popular with a large sum of money raised by the end. Mrs. Farragher kindly donated fifty euro of this to St Vincent de Paul, which was greatly appreciated by the workers in the shop.
