Christmas Concert
On the gelid 22nd of December, our Annual Christmas concert was held in our expansive school gym. This years concert displayed a particularly extensive, varied and impressive set of performances, with each year represented.
Perhaps the most spellbinding performance was titled ‘Boybands’, who performed a variety of songs by male singers, while dressed in androgynous outfits. They won the overall prize for entertainment, and had even the most insouciant, obsequious students standing on their seats for an optimum view, and the more obstreperous singing, rather euphonically, along.
Other performances were of course the furthest adjective from insipid or mundane, with an eclectic mix of singers, dancers and even karate demonstrative performances throughout the morning.
The eagerly anticipated Teachers performance, kept esoteric until the concerts close, was so less exuberant, with their impressions of celebrities, in which the aid of headshots and bedazzling costumes were enlisted.
Their sonorous performance was wholeheartedly applauded by students, and at the mornings conclusion, all were left proud and exultant at this years vivacious achievement of a Christmas concert, with assiduous and tenacious efforts dedicated by all.

The Year So Far
November. “November?!?” I hear you ask, “Already?!?”. Okay, so maybe the rest of you are accustomed to the passing of time but it’s come as a real surprise to me. How can it already be socially acceptable to mention the C-H-R-S-I-T-M-A-S word? So that means that I’ve had two-and-a-half months of TY. Ah TY. I won’t go too much into the blissful wonder that is TY, ‘cause we don’t want to make the 5th years too jealous. Instead I’ll give you a brief overview of what us TYs have been up to so far this year. ~ We all went hill walking on Coomshingaun (no-one will ever spell that right, so let’s just go with the Comeragh’s). Despite the cries of “But Miss! This isn’t a hill! Are ye crazy?! To the top of where-?! Omg the wind is making my hair frizzy! Ew exercise and sheep and mud!” (Teenage girls eh?) I’m pretty sure everyone enjoyed themselves. ~ On the 21st September we all headed off to the ploughing: collecting pens, eating chips, hanging by the Flahavan’s Oats stall (can’t beat a bit of free porridge!), collecting pens, nabbing freebies, managing to spend the day without seeing a single plough….oh and did I mention collecting pens? ~I attended a Justice & Peace seminar in Dublin with Sinead McDonagh and Ciara Comerford. Through a series of informative lectures we were convinced we could change the world (between tea and KitKat breaks that is). ~While we were raving it up in Dublin, the rest of our year headed to Glendalough for a Geography/History trip. Despite losing one or two or three people, it seemed to be great success. Don’t worry, we got them back eventually. ~On Monday the 18th we all piled onto the bus and headed to the Ursuline Convent for their production of The Sound Of Music. It was mega impressive, let alone the actresses, the set was pretty phenomenal, and I think I must’ve had “The hiiiiills are aliiiiive with the sound of muuuuuuusiiiic” stuck in my head for at least a fortnight afterward. ~As a member of the debating team, I went up to UCD (*cough* via Dundrum shopping centre *cough*) with Vicky Day, Shauna Scannell and Ciara Mahon to propose the motion that cannabis should be legalised. Despite winning the inter-Loreto debating competition way back in second year we were all pretty nervous, maybe even freaked out, as the debate had a completely different format. We all got really positive feedback, and Ciara Mahon was chosen to proceed to the next round. Well that’s it so far, and there’s a lot else happening besides trips! But again, we don’t wanna make the 5th years too envious, eh? With that I’ll bid you adieu! Over and out, Hannah.

Fourth year trip to the Watershed
On Wednesday the 21st of September, all Loreto fourth years went on an outing to the watershed gym and leisure centre in celebration of the wonderful junior cert results. The two buses left the school at eleven headed across town. When they arrived, the students were split up into two groups and were put on different schedules for the day. Classes A and B went into the hall and had a circuits class followed by an aerobics class, taught by an extremely enthusiastic personal trainer. Meanwhile, classes C and D were having and aqua-aerobics class followed by some free time in the pool. When both groups were finished, there was a swap-around and the first group went swimming and vice versa. When both groups were done, all the students got back on the buses and headed back to the school in time for buses home.

It was also the day for Frisbee at lunchtime organized for the 3rd years and another 5th year mile run. Thursday was the final of the Basketball Tournament for the 1st years with team Pink taking the winning title.

 Second Year Soccer Tournament
On Monday afternoon, the 3rd of October, a soccer tournament was held for second year classes Aileen and Aine. This tournament was organised by Chloe Power, Fionnuala Quinlan, Laura Phelan and Mikayla Nelson. It was a fantastic success with lots of skill and talent shown by all teams.
The teams were very evenly matched which made for a great contest. In the end Barcelona won, but only after narrowly beating Liverpool on goal difference! Well done to all the girls who participated. It was a very enjoyable day for everyone because of the enthusiasm and effort of the second year girls. A massive thanks to all the teachers who helped supervise the tournament or who let the second years miss their class and also to all the fourth years who helped referee and manage the teams.
I’m sure we have some soccer stars of the future here in Loreto !!!

Hockey:Senior A`s v Loreto Wex.16/11/11.
Last Wednesday, the 16th of November, our Senior A hockey team travelled to Enniscorthy to play their first match of this year’s league against Loreto Wexford. After gaining lots of experience in Cheltenham, they were ready to display this against the Wexford girls.
The ball was tipped off at 11:15am and from the beginning it was evident we were the better team. There was great passing between the forwards and midfields and Aoife Murphy and Aine Buggy managed to get numerous shots in on goal. We mostly had possession and Loreto Wexford found it challenging to get the ball into our defending half. Just before the first half ended, Aine sent a great ball across to Aoife who shot first time and scored.
When the teams came out after half time it was clear that Loreto Wexford were determined to get one back on us. Their play began to improve and they had a few near chances. Niamh Leahy replaced Louise Kenny as left wing, about ten minutes into the second half, and worked extremely hard , as did the other forwards.
Loreto Wexford were awarded a short corner but our defenders were too strong for them and the ball was cleared. The forwards kept up the good work and were unlucky not to score another goal. The final score was 1-0. Overall, it was a good match and we hope the seniors maintain this standard throughout the rest of the league.

Hockey:Senior B`s v Ursuline Waterford.
The Senior B hockey team travelled to Ursuline Waterford last Wednesday to play their first match of the 2011/12 league. Playing the match on an unfamiliar grit pitch proved a challenge for the Loreto girls. Unfortunately, an early goal from an Ursuline attack left Loreto in arrears right from the outset.
In due course they came to grips with the new surface and their play began to flow. They won a number of frees but failed to find the goal despite superb play from forwards Sinéad McDonagh , Chloe Power and Orla Dooley. Ursuline won a short corner which was ably defended and cleared by a strong Loreto backline. Emma Dooley, who replaced Sinéad McDonagh as left wing, was extremely unfortunate to have a goal disallowed due to foot infringement in the circle.
Loreto trailed 1-0 at half time and came out in the second half with all guns blazing. In defence, Annie Condren and Fionnuala Quinlan had great games, ensuring no ball got passed them. Aoife Kenealy and Marie Doheny made some excellent clearances at centre back and sweeper. Goalkeeper, Roisin Downey made some tremendous saves and managed to keep a clean sheet for the second half. Loreto created some openings as the game moved on but failed to convert these into vital scores. Sarah Hennessy hit accross some fantastic passes to Catriona Twomey and Niamh Leahy. Despite numerous shots on the Ursuline goal they were unlucky not to score.
This was a hard fought match from start to finish. The early goal was the difference between the two teams when the final whistle blew. Despite failing to bag league points in this match, the Loreto side must be given credit for a spirited performance on the day.

Hockey meeting.Dec 1 2011.
Thursday, December the 1st, it was called for all senior hockey players to assemble in Room 11 for an important meeting. Trainers, David and Ms. Holland spoke about the performance of the girls against Kilkenny College and commended them all for their great efforts. It was decided that a few aspects of the game need to be worked on and therefore an extra training session was scheduled for Wednesdays after school. It is hoped that this will aid to the team’s success in the future. During the meeting, Captain, Aoife Murphy took sizes of the players on the Senior League team to order gear for them.

Interpro`s. 22nd and 23rd October 2011.
The weekend of the 22rd and 23rd of October 2011, the annual girls interprovincial U16 and U18 tournament took place, this year the venue being Belfast. Over the summer, trials and training for the teams of the different provinces were with several from our school attending. In the end, four Loreto girls in total got the opportunity to travel north and represent the south-east in the interprovincial tournament. Sarah Lanigan was a member of the U16 team while Aine Buggy, Louise Kenny and Ciara Mahon played with the U18’s. Despite the large panels, all four girls got plenty of pitch time and proved themselves worthy representatives of their province. In conclusion, the U16’s finished in third place and the U18’s in fifth place. Although not winners of the tournament, all girls enjoyed immensely the experience and did their school proud. We wish them continued success in their hockey careers in the future.
